Not that anyone but me cares, but here’s some recent news on the WCLZ/WCYI sale front. Via Fybush:
One more Maine note: WCYI (93.9 Lewiston), still for sale by the Citadel-spinoff Last Bastion Station Trust, has dropped its simulcast of WCLZ (98.9 Brunswick), as that station heads for Saga ownership. WCYI’s now running an automated all-blues format while Last Bastion seeks a buyer. And the “Greetings from Area Code 207″ local-music show that was heard on WCLZ under Citadel ownership is staying with the company; it’s moved to WBLM (102.9 Portland).
I actually heard this “automated all-blues format” on 93.9 the other night on the way back from work. There were no DJ’s no voice tracking, hardly any station promos aside from announcing the frequency and call letters at the top of the hour. It was like listening to a blues fan’s iPod on shuffle or something. It’s a shame it most likely won’t stay that way, because it’s really cool to hear something different on the radio.
Between that, the full moon clearly visible in the pre-sunset sky, and my impending change of job/career/industry, the carpool home Wednesday night felt like something altogether new, alien, and exciting.
Oh, and…RED SOX FTW! ‘Nuff said.
I read a comment on WLCZ’s blog that implied that the station had gone off the air, but I think the poster just misinterpreted the post. Anyway, I went searching for more information on the impending WCLZ sale and came across your site. I’ll have to check out the new, albeit temporary WCYI while I can. I haven’t really enjoyed WMPG’s Evening Sun block lately, perhaps this will be different? I hope so. Thanks for the information!

About a week ago, I came across 93.9 WCYI and my radio has, for the most part, stayed on that station. I love it. I wouldn’t mind if it stayed just how it is. Probably not practical….but, I can wish.
It’s about time! Finally there is a radio station worth listening to. I have not changed my radio station, or listened to a CD since I’ve discovered the new format of WCYI.
It’s great to hear a radio station that plays nothing but the blues. It’s about time Maine had a stickly blues station. Keep it going.

As I was seaching for some music early Sunday morning a few weeks back I came across a blues tune and my dial hasn’t changed since. A wish come true – The BLUES on the radio. It’s so good I wouldn’t complain even if there were commercials. Too bad it’s not going to last. I can only hope I’m wrong.

I picked up WCYI almost by accident about a month ago, and I’m hooked. I live at least 75 miles from Lewiston and the reception up here is fine. Their playlist is a bit short but they’re playing some great music that no other station in Maine is doing on a regular basis. Will the format survive? I can only hope.
Based on the posting dates, it looks like I’m late, but like others I was driving along (returning from a gig with an old band in CT), on my way back to Canada when I found Blues at 93. 9 fm. (I picked it up north of Portland and lost it quite a ways easst of Augusta. I loved it! The no commercials was great – but even with commercials it would have been wonderful.
As a singer/songwriter and a guy who plays a bunch of Blues, both alone and with a four piece band called “8 Ball” – I was hoping I could get them to play some of my stuff – selected tunes (including “Kill My Axe”) available at http://www.myspace.com/ralautens . So, maybe some of you Blues fans could tell me where to send some of my music so it might show up on stations that you hear.
It would trulely be wonderful if this station was around when I made my next trip to the US.

WCYI is for sale; it is owned by The Last Bastion Station Trust, LLC, which bought it from Citadel Broadcasting when Citadel Broadcasting had to divest itself of 12 stations to satisfy FCC requirements.
Each of the 12 plays automated music, in the case of 93.9, it is blues, except from 6-9 when, ironically considering who created the blues, WCYI (93.9) broadcasts the homophobic and sometimes racist Opie and Anthony show.
