Scott Andrew on "creating demand"

One of the things that gets talked about a lot over at Indieheaven, one of my online stomping grounds, is that as independent musicians, we need to “create demand” for what we do – to make people care when we release a CD or play a concert. I just read this post over at Scott Andrew LePera’s site that addresses the fundamental problem pretty well:

I’d put up 500 flyers around town, chalk all the sidewalks around the University, and then wonder why only ten people showed up. What I didn’t understand was that while flyers are great for letting people know about a show, they’re not so great for getting people to care.

So, how do we make people care?

  1. Buzz.

    Remember, buzz is one-off.

  2. Oh, come on … I didn’t twig interest with that leading comment? ;)

  3. Heh…I thought it was pretty straightforward, actually. :) One-off, as in “they tell two friends, then they tell two friends, and so on…” etc., right? That “meme” stuff has to start with someone, after all…

  4. I like the way it captured.
